Reflect on your inquiry question and how your understanding is changing, becoming more focused, or is perhaps being reaffirmed by your research. What do you now know that you didn’t know when you started this inquiry?
Before I started my research for this project, I based my inquiry question around the written components of slam poetry, hoping to find a lot of differences between the elements of writing regular poetry and writing slam poetry. Turns out there aren’t really any variations in writing slam poetry and other forms in poetry, such as free verse poetry. Most poetry writing consists of the same elements, including rhythm, repetition, alliteration, similes and such. Therefore, my understanding for my project is changing and slowly shifting towards what I found interesting. Instead of focusing on the elements of poetry, I am putting most of my attention on the performance of slam poetry. For my presentation, I will talk about the rules of slam poetry competitions and the main stage manners while performing. I will also probably talk about gesticulation and different vocal changes (volume, speed, etc.) a performer will choose to add to their slam poem. Following my explanation, I will conduct an activity for the class. I haven’t decided what activity I will do for my presentation yet, but hopefully my further research will lead me to an idea.
